Saskatoon is a city located in the center of the province of Saskatchewan. The city sits on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and along the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway.
Although it is not the capital, the city is the most populous in Saskatchewan since it surpassed the provincial capital, Regina. Its population of approximately 266,000 makes it the 19th most populous city in the country. Its census metropolitan area has a population of approximately 317,000.
Saskatoon is home to the University of Saskatchewan, the Meewasin Valley Authority (which protects the South Saskatchewan River and provides the city's popular waterfront park spaces), and Wanuskewin Heritage Park (a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage candidate representing 6,000 years of First Nations history).
The production of many grains, livestock, petroleum and natural gas, potash, uranium, coal and industries associated with these dominate the local economy.
The headquarters of Cameco, the world's largest uranium company (publicly traded), and PotashCorp, the world's largest potash company are both in Saskatoon. Almost two-thirds of the world's recoverable potash reserves are located in the Saskatoon area.
The Canadian Synchrotron Light Centre, home to the country's only synchrotron, is also located in Saskatoon.
One of Saskatoon's nicknames, "Hub City", refers to its ideal central location in Canada for distribution and logistics.
