Formerly called the Yukon Territory, the Yukon is the smallest and westernmost of Canada's three territories.
It is also the second least populated province or territory in Canada, with a population of approximately 40,000 peoples.
Although officially bilingual, the Yukon government also recognizes First Nations languages.

The region includes Whitehorse, the territorial capital, and the cities of Faro, Mayo, Dawson, Carmacks, Haines Junction, Teslin, and Watson Lake.

Yukon's main industry is mining (lead, zinc, silver, gold, asbestos, and copper).

The territory's scenic wonders and outdoor recreation opportunities make tourism the second largest industry in the territory.
Outdoor activities, hunting, angling, canoeing/kayaking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing and dog sledding are offered both in an organized setting and in the backcountry accessible by plane or snowmobile. Yukon festivals and sporting events include the Adäka Cultural Festival, the Yukon International Storytelling Festival, and the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.
The latitude of the Yukon also allows the sight of the Northern Lights.
The territory is also home to several businesses that allow tourists to experience the pre-colonial and modern cultures of Yukon First Nations and Inuit.

Manufacturing, including furniture, clothing, and handicrafts, follows in economic importance, along with hydroelectricity.
The public sector also remains an important employer.

At 5,959 m (19,551 ft), Yukon's Mount Logan in Kluane National Park and Reserve is Canada's highest mountain and the second highest on the North American continent. Notable rivers in the region include the Yukon River as well as the Pelly, Stewart, Peel, White, Liard, and Tatshenshini rivers.
