St. Catharines is the largest town in the Niagara region, in the south of the province, at the entrance to the Welland Canal. 42nd most populous city in Canada, it is also the 6th largest urban area in Ontario with more than 136,000 inhabitants.
It is located 51km south of Toronto across Lake Ontario and 19km inland from the international border with the United States.
St. Catharines is nicknamed 'The Garden City' because of its 4 square km of parks, gardens and paths. The city is home to art galleries, museums but also several festivals including the Folk Arts Festival and the Niagara Wine Festival which attract many visitors each year.
