The Northern region of Saskatchewan is in the province of Saskatchewan which is itself located in the West of the country, in the middle of the three prairie provinces. It is bordered to the west by Alberta, to the north by the Northwest Territories, to the east by Manitoba, to the northeast by Nunavut. It is mainly forested, and sparsely populated.
The Canadian Shield is a geological shield corresponding to a current geographical area located in Canada and the United States, composed of bare rock, covers northern Saskatchewan. The human population is very sparse there. The shield is one of the richest areas in the world in terms of ores and minerals. It is filled with substantial deposits of nickel, gold, silver, and copper. Throughout northern Canada, many mining towns mined these minerals.
