Our client is looking for an experienced Payroll Accountant to join their team in Edmonton, Alberta. This role supports payroll accounting operations, financial reporting, and collaboration with internal teams and external service providers. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, sound judgement, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage complex payroll reconciliations in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities:

• Monitor payroll accounting activities and ensure accurate payroll reporting in the general ledger.
• Review payroll data from external providers, resolve discrepancies, and coordinate corrections.
• Prepare payroll journal entries and reconcile payroll-related accounts.
• Maintain accurate employee cost allocations across departments and cost centres.
• Coordinate payroll remittances and ensure compliance with deadlines and regulations.
• Support month-end and year-end close processes, reporting, and variance analysis.
• Assist with audits, compliance reviews, and payroll documentation requests.
• Collaborate with Finance, HR, and external providers to improve payroll processes and systems.

• 10+ years of progressive payroll accounting experience, including reconciliations, reporting, and payroll process oversight.
• Experience working with outsourced/third-party payroll providers and resolving payroll discrepancies.
• Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, statutory remittances, payroll accounting, and internal controls.
• Advanced Excel skills, including large data analysis, reconciliations, pivot tables, and lookup functions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve root causes.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain payroll impacts to stakeholders.
• Experience with payroll/accounting systems such as ADP, Ceridian, SAP SuccessFactors, JDE EnterpriseOne, and Concur is an asset.
