Interim Controller / Finance Manager

Location: :  Hybrid role in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, 1 to 2 days per week onsite, after an initial onsite (approx. 3 days) training period.

Industry: Utilities, energy, infrastructure, telecom, or another regulated environment

Duration: 3–4 months, with potential for extension

Our client, an established organization in a regulated industry, is seeking an experienced Interim Controller/Finance Manager for a contract opportunity. This role is ideal for a hands-on finance leader who brings strong technical accounting expertise, proven team leadership, and the ability to step into a fast-paced environment and quickly establish priorities.

The Controller/ Finance Manager will oversee day-to-day finance operations, lead a team of 3, and support reporting across standalone affiliated entities. This position will play a key role in financial statement preparation, board reporting, treasury oversight, internal review processes, and team leadership during a period of transition.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 3 finance professionals across areas including analysis, payroll/accounts payable, and accounts receivable/billing
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements for a small number of standalone entities
• Ensure financial reporting is completed accurately and in accordance with GAAP/IFRS
• Prepare quarterly board reporting packages, including commentary and explanations of financial results
• Oversee treasury-related activities, including banking coordination, cash oversight, and loan payment monitoring
• Support quarterly bank compliance requirements and reporting
• Review and approve key financial transactions, including payments, purchase orders, journal entries, payroll, and receivables
• Provide day-to-day leadership, prioritization, mentoring, and guidance to the finance team
• Maintain strong internal controls and support review processes within a regulated environment
• Assist with budgeting activities and other finance-related projects
• Support process improvement initiatives and work within an ERP environment

Qualifications

• Proven experience in a Controller, Finance Manager, or similar finance leadership role
• Strong technical accounting background with experience preparing and reviewing financial statements
• Knowledge of GAAP and/or IFRS
• Demonstrated success leading, coaching, and developing a finance team
• Experience in a regulated industry such as utilities, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, financial services, or another compliance-driven environment is highly preferred
• Comfortable working in a hands-on capacity with both strategic oversight and day-to-day operational involvement
• Experience preparing board reporting and communicating financial results to senior leadership
• Treasury and banking compliance oversight experience is an asset
• Experience with ERP systems; exposure to Business Central is preferred
• Ability to work on-site initially to support transition, with hybrid flexibility over the course of the assignment
