THE ROLE:

Our client, a provincially funded not-for-profit organization, is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations and support financial reporting across multiple entities, including community service programs and a housing corporation. Reporting to senior leadership, the Controller will oversee month-end close, financial statement preparation, budgeting, audit coordination, and grant reporting. This role will supervise a small finance team and ensure accurate reporting to management, boards, auditors, and government funders.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead month-end and year-end close activities
• Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and working papers
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Oversee grant reporting and ensure compliance with funding requirements
• Coordinate annual audits and government funding reviews
• Monitor budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis
• Supervise accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions
• Provide financial reporting and analysis to leadership, boards, and finance committees
• Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies

YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

• CPA designation is considered an asset but is not required
• 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
• Previous leadership or supervisory experience
• Strong financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting capabilities
• Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes
• Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and lookup functions
• Sage 300 experience is an asset
• Experience within a not-for-profit, government-funded, or grant-funded environment is highly preferred
• Knowledge of multi-entity reporting, restricted funding, and program-based allocations
• Strong communication skills with the ability to support executives, boards, auditors, and external stakeholders
