Our client is a well-established and growing residential home builder and land developer with a strong reputation for creating exceptional communities across the GTA. With a robust pipeline of future development projects, the organization is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead its finance and accounting function.

Reporting directly to the President, the Controller will play a key leadership role in overseeing financial operations, managing a high-performing accounting team, and providing strategic financial guidance to support continued growth.

Position Summary

The Controller will be responsible for all aspects of financial reporting, project accounting, budgeting, treasury management, and internal controls. This individual will partner closely with operations, construction, development, and executive leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting and effective financial management across multiple projects and entities.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting process.
• Prepare and review consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Ensure compliance with ASPE, and relevant regulatory requirements.
• Oversee general ledger, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
• Manage year-end audits and liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
• Monitor and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Construction & Project Accounting

• Oversee accounting for residential construction and land development projects.
• Monitor project budgets, costs, profitability, and cash flow forecasts.
• Analyze project performance and provide detailed reporting to senior management.
• Review construction draws, development expenditures, lot inventories, and project allocations.
• Ensure timely and accurate capitalization of development and construction costs.
• Oversee joint venture and partnership accounting where applicable.

Treasury & Cash Management

• Manage corporate cash flow, liquidity, and banking relationships.
• Prepare short and long-term cash flow forecasts.
• Support financing activities, lender reporting, and covenant compliance.
• Monitor project financing requirements and funding draws.

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.
• Establish performance objectives and promote professional development.
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with operational leaders to support strategic decision-making.

Strategic Finance

• Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Provide financial analysis and recommendations to executive leadership.
• Assist with acquisition, development, financing, and investment evaluations.
• Contribute to system enhancements, process improvements, and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications

• CPA designation required.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
• 3+ years of leadership experience managing accounting teams.
• Previous experience within residential home building, construction, real estate development, or land development environments is required.
• Strong knowledge of project accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, and development accounting.
• Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
