    Description

We are looking for a Controller to join our client's team in Toronto, Ontario on a Contract basis. This role is well suited to a finance professional who can translate complex financial information into clear insights, strengthen internal controls, and support sound operational planning. The successful candidate will play a key part in budgeting, reporting, audit readiness, and day-to-day financial oversight while partnering with stakeholders across the organization.

    3-mon contract.

Work model: 4 days onsite, mid-town Toronto, ON.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepare and present meaningful financial updates for leadership by reviewing results, identifying key trends, and explaining relevant performance indicators.

    • Apply organizational policies and sound financial judgment to support decision-making in response to changing economic conditions.

    • Establish, refine, and monitor internal financial controls, procedures, and guidelines to promote accuracy, compliance, and accountability.

    • Lead budgeting activities by coordinating timelines, assessing variances, and recommending corrective actions to keep financial plans on track.

    • Contribute to both immediate and longer-range operational planning by providing financial insight and strategic support to leadership.

    • Coordinate year-end audit preparation, including supporting documentation, reconciliations, and responses to audit-related requests.

    • Oversee processes related to donation receipt deposits and reconciliations, including alignment between fundraising and finance procedures.

    • Partner with the Director of Finance to interpret financial results and develop monthly and annual reporting materials for stakeholders.

    • Review spending patterns and operational costs to identify efficiencies, reduce financial risk, and improve overall performance.

    • Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable activities while coaching team members, managing workloads, and ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related discipline, along with a recognized accounting designation - CPA or relevant.

    • At least 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong background in financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable finance legislation, regulatory requirements, and tax compliance obligations across multiple jurisdictions.

    • Strong understanding of banking practices, economic factors, and financial risk management principles.

    • Experience in non-profit or fund accounting environments, with familiarity using major financial ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.

    • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams while maintaining a thorough, service-focused approach in all interactions.

    • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting.

    • Comfortable working in a technology-enabled environment; experience with payroll processes would be considered an asset.
