Due to a retirement, our downtown client is looking for an experienced Accounting Manager or Controller to oversee financial operations and support sound business decisions in Ottawa, Ontario. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate reporting, strengthening internal controls, and guiding the finance function through month-end, year-end, and audit activities. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Finance and work closely with leaders across the organization to promote consistent accounting practices, manage compliance obligations, and help the accounting operations team operate efficiently.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the daily work of the finance and accounting function, providing leadership, guidance, and performance oversight to team members.

• Manage core accounting activities across the organization, including the general ledger, payables, receivables, payroll administration, and cash management.

• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to ensure reporting is accurate, complete, and delivered on schedule.

• Monitor financial records and banking transactions to maintain strong data integrity and dependable reporting outcomes.

• Advise leadership on financial results, cash flow considerations, budgeting impacts, and practical strategies for responsible use of resources.

• Refine accounting procedures and promote consistent application of policies across departments and operating areas.

• Coordinate the annual external audit, organize supporting documentation, and address audit questions or findings in a timely manner.

• Evaluate financial and regulatory risks, assess the effectiveness of internal controls, and implement improvements where needed.

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field.

• An accounting designation completed or in progress is considered an asset.

• At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity. In this role you will oversee 4 staff. Good mentor required.

• Hands-on experience with full-cycle accounting, including ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, treasury, and period-end close.

• Background supporting operations across multiple provinces, with knowledge of payroll, taxation, and regulatory compliance requirements.

• Strong bilingual communication skills in both English and French.

• Familiarity with accounting and finance systems such as ERP platforms. Working experience with Oracle financials is a significant benefit.

• Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and payroll compliance practices is expected
