Halifax is the capital, the largest municipality, and a region of the province of Nova Scotia. It is also the seat of the provincial Crown of Nova Scotia and the largest municipality in the Atlantic Provinces.
One of Canada's oldest cities consist of four former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Halifax County.
Its population is over 440,000 residents, which ranks it 13th among the most populated cities in the country. It is also the most populous city on the Atlantic coast of Canada and the second largest coastal city in the country, after Vancouver, British Columbia. The city has about 40% of the population of Nova Scotia and 15% of that of the Atlantic provinces.
Halifax is the commercial, banking, government, and cultural center of the Maritimes region.
