Halifax is the capital, the largest municipality, and a region of the province of Nova Scotia. It is also the seat of the provincial Crown of Nova Scotia and the largest municipality in the Atlantic Provinces.
One of Canada's oldest cities consist of four former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Halifax County.

It is also the most populous city on the Atlantic coast of Canada and the second largest coastal city in the country, after Vancouver, British Columbia. The city has about 40% of the population of Nova Scotia and 15% of that of the Atlantic provinces.
Halifax is the commercial, banking, government, and cultural center of the Maritimes region.
Major employers and economic generators include the Department of National Defense, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary's University, Halifax Shipyard, various federal government departments as well as Halifax Harbour.
The Port of Halifax is indeed one of the top four container ports in Canada in terms of volume of cargo handled.
Agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry, and natural gas extraction are the main resource industries present in the rural areas of the municipality.
Other resource industries in Halifax include the natural gas fields of Sable Island, as well as the mining of clay, shale, gold, limestone and gypsum in rural areas of the part mainland of the municipality. Limestone is mined in the Musquodoboit Valley, and gold is mined at Moose River.
The Halifax area is served by Halifax Stanfield International Airport and the Port of Halifax.
