Located in the northwestern part of the province of Alberta, 456 km northwest of Edmonton, Grande Prairie is the region's largest economic centre.
With more than 64,000 inhabitants, it is the 88th most populous city in Canada.
Grande Prairie benefits from a diversified economy. The main industries are oil and gas, agriculture, forestry and food services.
Agriculture was the first economic pillar of the city. A variety of crops such as barley, wheat, canola and oats are grown in the area. Livestock such as cattle and buffalo (bison) are also raised there.
Grande Prairie's location atop the Montney and Duvernay geological formations has seen local extraction activities focused on natural gas condensate and shale gas. Due to this concentration, the region has maintained relatively high levels of activity compared to areas where conventional resources, shallow gas or heavy oil are the main resources.
Forestry is also an important part of Grande Prairie's economy, with its vast expanses of forest that lie to the south in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. International Paper's kraft pulp mill, opened in 1972 by Procter & Gamble, is one of Grande Prairie's largest employers.
Grande Prairie serves as an economic and transportation hub for a trade area of nearly 290,000 people thanks to its strategic geographic position on the CANAMEX trade route linking Canada, the United States and Mexico.
