The Edmonton region, also commonly referred to Greater Edmonton or Metro Edmonton, is a conglomeration of municipalities centered around Alberta's provincial capital, Edmonton.
Located in the center of the province and at the northern end of the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, the Edmonton region is the northernmost metropolitan area in Canada.
Its population is approximately 1,300,000 residents, making it the sixth largest census metropolitan area in Canada by population.
The main towns in the region are Beaumont, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, St. Albert, and Spruce Grove. It also includes four Indian reserves for three First Nations (Alexander 134 from the Alexander First Nation, Enoch Cree Nation 135 from the Enoch Cree Nation and Wabamun 133A and 133B from the Paul First Nation).
The Edmonton area is considered a major gateway to Northern Alberta and Canada's North, especially for many businesses, including airlines and oil and gas exploration.
Edmonton's economy is primarily based on fossil fuels due to the large amount of oil present in northern Alberta. The city is thus a major center for the oil and gas industry.
Several other large industries are present in Edmonton, in the field of construction, education and health (hospitals). It is also one of the main research and teaching centers in Canada.
