Marine Atlantic's terminal in North Sydney is the terminal for major ferries traveling to Channel-Port aux Basques and seasonally to Argentia, both on the island of Newfoundland.

Port Hawkesbury is home of extensive handling facilities for petrochemicals, pulp and paper, and gypsum.

Islanders have attempted to diversify the region's economy by investing in tourism developments, call centers and small businesses, as well as manufacturing ventures in areas such as auto parts, pharmaceuticals and glazing.
