Improving professional performance with the ‘small steps’ method

When it comes to your career, are you motivated by personal development, work performance or by climbing the ladder of corporate success? Regardless of what pushes you to achieve greater things, the most important thing you can do in your pursuit of success is to feed the fire that nourishes your thirst to learn. This fire will drive you pursue excellence in the work that you do with your organization.

People who are highly successful in their chosen profession are often those with the capacity to be creative and act in a way that allows them to be very productive. So what’s their secret?  They are disciplined, have a close circle of people around them, and stick to simple routines.

Take for example the marathon runner who decides to challenge himself by running for several hours without pause. This person will be able to cross the finish line if he is disciplined in his training, well-prepared and well-nourished – in other words, if he creates the conditions favorable to success. He will surround himself with people who share his passion and who encourage him. By observing several highly-motivated and successful people such as these, we’ve come to conclude that it is a series of small actions that will allow them to reach the heights of success.

In your professional life, why not follow the example of the marathon runner? While the results are spectacular, the small-steps method involves advancing towards a goal slowly but surely. By focusing on completing small actions consistently, this allows a person to gradually progress towards their ultimate objectives. Whether this means reading up on a field that interests you, taking an observation day with someone who works in a field you want to enter, networking, or going back to school, any or all of these steps will help you make progress toward where you want to be. That being said, the key is to have a realistic and obtainable goal.

Be careful to not indulge in overstimulation, too much ambition or the trap of trying to live “thrilling” moments constantly. If you feel that a day without these strong sensations is a wasted day, you’re doing it wrong. A fixation on over-performing can lead to professional burnout. This is why it’s important to gradually integrate small steps toward your goal as part of your daily life: this will teach you how to balance your long-term professional goals with your daily routines.

Follow your path according to your own rhythm and by following the small steps method. This type of productive repetition will multiply your knowledge and ability while galvanizing your personal experiences, not to mention keep you stimulated on a daily basis.

Over time you will learn that taking responsibility for your professional progress is critical to achieving your goals. By following a concrete action plan related to achieving your objectives, you gain some mastery and control over yourself and your life, allowing you to further focus your efforts and pursue your professional adventure.
