The beginning of a new year is the best time to make resolutions. Perhaps you want to improve your health by exercising more, spend more time with your family by working fewer hours, or enhance your professional life by getting a new job.
While nearly 77% of French-speaking workers interviewed by Jobboom said that they had made resolutions for 2020, fully 88% of English-speaking workers surveyed said they are determined to change one or more aspects of their personal and/or professional life in the coming year.
Unsurprisingly, for many respondents their New Year’s resolutions will be achieved through change: nearly 25% of French-speaking respondents said they want to find a new job, while nearly 12% want to change fields. This trend is even stronger among English-speaking workers: 31% of those surveyed said they want to find a new job in 2020, while over 18% want to change sectors entirely.
Respondents who do not intend to change job this year still wish to improve their relationship with their working life or progress in their current position.
- Nearly 19% of English-speaking respondents want to reduce their levels of stress at work, while over 12% want to improve their performance at work.
- 19% of French-speaking respondents said they want to reduce their levels of stress at work and 14% plan to request a raise or a promotion from their employer.
Among those respondents who are currently unemployed, a majority say that finding a new job will be their priority in the New Year (68.4% among Francophones and 50% among Anglophones). Returning to school or undertaking retraining to enter a new professional sector were the next-most mentioned priorities among both groups.
Success or money in 2020?
What are survey respondent shopping for in 2020?
Health and happiness were the two most popular responses from respondents in Quebec. While 20% of English-speaking workers chose success over money as a priority in the New Year, some 12% of French-speaking workers said money is more important to them than success. These two objectives, although distinct, are intimately linked to their professional life.
Love does not seem to be much of a priority this year for those surveyed: only 4% of English-speaking respondents and 7% of French-speaking respondents listed love among their priorities for the New Year.
Happy 2020!
