Job Description
Robert Half is seeking a Financial Consultant for a short-term project opportunity supporting a comprehensive funding and operational review within the charitable and not-for-profit sector. This role is ideal for a consultant with strong experience in charitable organizations, not-for-profit accounting, financial compliance, audit, and funding accountability. The consultant will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to assess funding structures, reporting requirements, financial restrictions, operational risks, and internal processes, while helping develop practical tools and recommendations for leadership. This opportunity is primarily remote with fractional hours over 60 days.

This role is ideal for a consultant with strong experience in charitable organizations, not-for-profit accounting, financial compliance, audit, and funding accountability. The consultant will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to assess funding structures, reporting requirements, financial restrictions, operational risks, and internal processes, while helping develop practical tools and recommendations for leadership. This opportunity is primarily remote with fractional hours over 60 days.
Key Responsibilities
- Review funding agreements, contribution agreements, service accountability agreements, and related contracts to identify financial obligations, restrictions, and operational impacts
- Classify funding sources as restricted or unrestricted, including analysis of allowable and non-allowable expenses
- Assess financial and operational constraints tied to funding, including surplus/deficit treatment, reserve requirements, and staffing limitations
- Analyze reporting obligations, compliance requirements, documentation standards, and funder accountability expectations
- Evaluate internal processes related to funding tracking, compliance oversight, and financial management
- Identify financial, operational, compliance, and sustainability risks
- Support the development of practical tools, frameworks, and recommendations for leadership use
- Participate in stakeholder discussions to validate findings and support organizational understanding
- Contribute to reports, presentations, and project deliverables
Qualifications
- CPA designation
- Demonstrated experience in the charitable and not-for-profit sector required
- Prior public accounting audit experience supporting nonprofit and charitable organizations, or equivalent advisory/review experience
- Strong knowledge of fund accounting, restricted funding, financial reporting, and compliance in nonprofit settings
- Experience reviewing financial agreements, audited statements, and accountability requirements
- Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills
- Ability to translate complex financial and funding information into practical guidance for leadership
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with healthcare, supportive housing, social services, community mental health, or addiction services organizations
- Experience conducting funding reviews, sustainability reviews, compliance reviews, or operational assessments
- Familiarity with Ontario public-sector or broader funder accountability environments
- Knowledge of funding structures involving healthcare, housing, municipal, or government sources
- Experience supporting executive leadership or board-level conversations
