Title: Interim Controller

Location: Toronto, ON

Work Model: Hybrid, only 2 days onsite (2 days onsite downtown Toronto, Bay & Bloor)

Duration: Approximately 3 months

Pay Rate: $50 - $60

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an Interim Controller to step into a key accounting leadership role and provide immediate support. This consultant will take ownership of core accounting operations, support quarter-end activities, oversee a small team, and help maintain continuity across reporting, close, and day-to-day finance functions.

This opportunity is well suited for a hands-on finance leader who can operate independently, get up to speed quickly, and provide structure in a fast-moving environment. The role will partner closely with senior finance leadership and support both Canadian operations and certain U.S.-related accounting and payroll considerations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day accounting activities and ensure continuity across core finance functions.
• Manage the quarter-end close process, including review, reconciliation, and clean-up of outstanding items.
• Oversee general ledger activity, journal entries, accounts payable processes, and financial reporting.
• Support multi-entity reporting and manual consolidated reporting in Excel.
• Review processes and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and controls.
• Provide oversight to a small accounting team, including offshore support.
• Partner with finance leadership on reporting priorities and business-critical accounting matters.
• Assist with Canadian and U.S.-related payroll oversight and related accounting considerations.
• Help maintain compliance with accounting policies, tax requirements, and reporting obligations.

Qualifications

• CPA designation is preferred. Open to other designations combined with significant experience.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including experience at the Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership level.
• Strong hands-on experience managing close processes in small to mid-sized organizations.
• Experience overseeing accounting staff, including remote or offshore team members.
• Strong background in financial reporting, general accounting, reconciliations, and internal controls.
• Experience with QuickBooks Online or similar cloud-based accounting systems.
• Advanced Excel skills, including experience with manual consolidations and entity-level reporting.
• Exposure to U.S. payroll, withholding, and cross-border accounting considerations is an asset.
• Experience in high-growth, entrepreneurial, digital commerce, retail, marketplace, technology-enabled, or consumer products environments is helpful.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize quickly, and stabilize accounting operations in a transition period.
