Manager, Taxation and Compliance

  • Position Description

    Reporting to the Director, Corporate Finance and Taxation, this position will be responsible for managing all aspects of income tax, indirect and commodity tax, property tax and other various government compliance requirements. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and possess technical tax experience, needed to minimize our tax liability and assure compliance with the domestic and US tax laws. Legal entity responsibilities include four large operating partnerships and one US-based corporation.

    Key Accountabilities

    Responsibilities include a wide range of activities (at varying degrees of involvement) including, but not limited to:
    * Income Tax Compliance – federal and provincial, preparation of all working papers for external tax advisors.
    * Preparation of Quarterly and Year-end Tax Provision under IFRS.
    * Oversee commodity and indirect tax filings, implement process improvements as required.
    * Audits – manage any federal and provincial corporate tax and sales tax audits that may arise, implement process improvements as a result of audit findings, as applicable.
    * Property Tax – manage property tax assessments and consider appeal process using outside consultants when necessary. Review payments made throughout the year.
    * Sales Tax – manage this function by requesting the ERP team for timely rate and other system changes to comply with federal & provincial legislations. Provide suitable training for staff working on sales tax compliance. Provide guidance to other departments, such as purchasing, accounts payable, and operations on the rules of application of the various sales taxes.
    * Cash Tax Analysis – prepare cash tax budget and review monthly actual cash tax payments vs budget/forecast.
    * Inter-Company Balances – Manage monthly reconciliations of inter-company balances and timely settlements in accordance with domestic income tax laws.
    * COSO – familiarity with implementing internal controls of a corporate tax department.
    * Acquisitions – assist integration teams and perform tax research into any issues arising as a result of acquisitions.
    * Statistics Canada - complete quarterly surveys, as applicable.
    * Customs and Duties - oversee quarterly customs reconciliations for importer of record (“IOR”) numbers of the Canadian operating partnerships. Act as a liaison with the customs broker on any customs and duty initiatives and regular compliance.

    Experience, Qualifications & Education
    * Professional accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA).
    * Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
    * Completed CICA In-Depth Tax Course.
    * 7+ years relevant experience in a professional service firm or in industry.
    * Excellent knowledge of tax accounting under IFRS, tax compliance and various types of returns (exposure to US tax returns an asset).
    * Experience in compiling income tax provisions.
    * Experience in using TaxPrep software and SAP ERP is an asset.
    * Strong computer skills.
    * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of the organization.
    * Highest level of integrity and strong work ethic.
    * Motivated to learn and expand on technical expertise with minimal help from others.
    * Detail oriented and highly organized.
    * Ability to work independently while also part of a team.
    * Ability to think outside the box and challenge the status quo; continuous improvement set of mind.
    * Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, simultaneously, while meeting tight deadlines.
    * Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment – willing to embrace change and accept that you will not be doing the same thing every day.
