We are looking for an experienced finance leader to join a community-focused organization in Stratford, Ontario on a Contract basis. This position combines strategic oversight with hands-on accounting responsibilities, making it ideal for someone who is comfortable leading financial operations while also managing core month-end activities. The successful candidate will support accurate reporting, oversee charity and non-profit accounting matters, and provide clear financial updates to internal stakeholders and committee members.

Responsibilities:

• Lead day-to-day financial operations, ensuring records are complete, accurate, and aligned with non-profit and charitable accounting practices.

• Prepare and review month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, amortization, and deferred revenue or donation balances.

• Produce regular financial statements and management reports, and present key information to senior leadership and the finance committee on a scheduled basis.

• Oversee the work of a small finance team, providing direction to the finance coordinator and maintaining efficient accounts receivable and accounts payable processes.

• Support human resources administration from a finance perspective and coordinate with payroll support to ensure related accounting is properly reflected.

• Monitor donations and charitable receipting activities to help ensure compliance and reduce risk in areas that could affect charitable standing.

• Maintain accounting records for multiple related entities within a consolidated general ledger environment, including minor intercompany activity where required.

• Assist with annual budgeting and periodic forecasting by working with managers and building on prior financial planning files and assumptions.

• Track financial elements of capital projects and service contracts, including timely payments to contractors and appropriate recording of capital-related transactions.

• Liaise with external parties such as auditors, municipal contract contacts, and investment advisors, and record any required financial adjustments or reporting entries.

• CPA designation or equivalent designation.

• Experience in finance or accounting leadership, ideally within a non-profit, charitable, or public sector environment.

• Strong hands-on knowledge of month-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, amortization, and deferred accounting.

• Demonstrated understanding of charity accounting principles and the compliance considerations related to charitable receipting.

• Ability to prepare financial statements, explain results clearly, and communicate effectively with executives, committees, and non-finance stakeholders.

• Experience working with accounting systems and advanced working knowledge of Excel.
