Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the finance function for their office in Ottawa, Ontario. This position is responsible for providing financial stewardship, strengthening oversight practices, and delivering accurate reporting that supports informed executive decision-making. The successful candidate will guide a finance team, promote strong governance, and help build a culture grounded in accountability, inclusion, and ethical leadership.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the day-to-day activities of the finance team, offering leadership, coaching, and clear priorities to support high-quality outcomes.

• Manage core financial operations across accounting, budgeting, forecasting, payroll coordination, and financial reporting to ensure effective departmental performance.

• Prepare and review financial statements and management reports, ensuring information is accurate, complete, and delivered within required timelines.

• Lead the annual budgeting cycle, track results against plan, and provide variance analysis and recommendations to senior leadership.

• Strengthen and maintain financial controls, policies, and procedures to support compliance, governance, and operational consistency.

• Oversee year-end financial close activities and act as the primary contact for internal and external review engagements.

• Provide strategic analysis on financial performance, organizational risks, and funding considerations to support leadership decisions.

• Manage financial systems and reporting tools while identifying opportunities to improve processes, efficiency, and continuity within finance operations.

• Represent the organization in discussions related to financial matters with external partners, government representatives, and financial institutions.

• Advance diversity, equity, and inclusion practices within the finance function while reinforcing transparency and ethical conduct.

• Demonstrated experience in a senior finance leadership role with responsibility for accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.

• Strong knowledge of financial controls, compliance requirements, and governance practices within a complex or public-sector environment.

• Proven ability to lead, develop, and support finance professionals in a collaborative and accountable team setting.

• Experience preparing financial statements, management reporting packages, and year-end documentation with a high degree of accuracy.

• Proficiency with accounting and reporting systems, including enterprise financial platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.

• Hands-on knowledge of budget administration, payroll processes, ad hoc financial analysis, and reporting tools.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to present financial insights to senior leaders and external parties.
