The role of buying director is to lead and manage the development and purchasing of optical and sunglasses frames, as well as the planning and execution of merchandise strategies to deliver sales and gross margin goals. While merchandise assortment and management are the main responsibilities of this role, the position also requires key involvement in marketing and pricing strategies. This position reports directly to the CEO. Candidates must be hands-on, resourceful, and employ a strategic way of thinking in all they do. We are looking for an experienced and entrepreneurial candidate capable of putting processes and departmental structure in place. Candidates must also be willing to travel, as the position requires travel to Asia, Europe, and North America a minimum of four to six times per year.

Drive the development of both short-term and long-term financial objectives for the division, including comp sales, gross margin percentage and inventory productivity.

Develop OTB and sales plans on a weekly and monthly basis; ensure planning aligns with company-wide goals and manage reconciliation on a regular basis.

Drive and implement replenishment strategies, including regional and seasonal opportunities. Create ad-hoc analysis to react to current and future business trends.

Drive overall SKU optimization goals and key item intensification. Develop and drive strategies to support increased comp sales growth and in-stocks.

Partner with various business units on planning of margins, IMU, markdown, discounts, promotions, events and advertisement.

Nurture existing vendor relationships and establish open communication with all vendors; ensure compliance is met.

Conduct research of new vendors aligned with business objectives and forge strong relationships.

Negotiate and pursue cost-saving opportunities with suppliers and manufacturers, ensuring company’s best interests are a top priority.

Ensure that all follow-ups on product placements adhere to specifications, quality standards, deadlines, and that deliveries are met as contracted.

Set strategic directions for design team to achieve financial objectives and assortment strategies.

Monitor sales performances; make necessary adjustments based on trends and changes in theme, style, season, etc.

Evaluate white space opportunities and develop strategies to address them.

Study competitor pricing and examine trends to develop competitive product offering and pricing for various markets.

Work with retail team to integrate customer feedback into future product procurement decisions; make recommendations for new styles based on previous and current selling performance and upcoming trends.

Solicit feedback from key business partners to best understand any issues and concerns, as well as to improve the effectiveness of team communication.

Partner with finance in managing overall buying department budget including payroll, expenditures, travel expenses, and quarterly budget forecasting.

Hire, encourage, coach, develop, and manage overall performance of the buying team; provide constructive feedback to team members in timely manner.

Stimulate proactive and forward-thinking analysis and encourage and reward team for improvement and innovation.

At least 10 years of retail allocation and merchandising planning experience

At least two to four years of experience in leading and managing planning and allocation teams

A minimum of bachelor’s degree in a related field

Previous experience working in fashion or retail is considered an asset
