Statement of Work

Freelance Assistant Curator/Graphic Designer (Contractor)

The Canadian Forces Logistics Museum (CFLM) is seeking a freelance Assistant Curator/Graphic Designer for a short-term contract. The Canadian Forces Logistics Museum is a small 450 sq m (4,500 sq ft) museum located on CFB Montreal in Montreal’s east end.

The contractor will fulfill the duties of assistant curator/graphic artist for the Mobile Museum project. Their primary duty is to design and realize a 12m (40’) showcase of the history of the Logistics Branch since 1968. The contractor will take on a project already in progress. They must complete the design of the Mobile Museum in collaboration with the Curator and the Digital Exhibit Coordinator. The responsibilities will include all visual imagery and layout of the text; advising the Curator on lighting and Mobile Museum layout and construction materials, infrastructure excluded. The assistant curator/graphic artist will also be called upon to modify existing permanent exhibits in the museum or to possibly create one.

Over-night travel outside of the city and lasting for up to a week may be required to facilitate the set-up of museum displays. The museum would provide the transportation and reimburse the other basic travel expenses.


Responsibilities
- collaborate with the Museum’s Curator to maintain schedule and project budget;
- consult and liaise with internal and external partners and outside vendors to produce strong visual communications;
- Conceive design graphics, artwork, and graphic visual materials;
- Create marketing materials, museum signage, and brochures;
- Help to drive the re-branding and creative identity of certain projects, while preserving the overall branding and identity of the Museum;
- Oversee artwork, print production, and trafficking jobs;
- Create and provide exhibit design plans at industry standards to the Mobile Museum production contractors;
- Create models of the mobile museum exhibits at designated intervals;
- Assist in research, storage and handling of artifacts;
- Prepare documents pertaining to acquisitions and maintain a temporary acquisitions register;
- Label and shelve library material in accordance with library standards;
- Assist Curator with appraising donations and assigning a fair value market as per Revenue Canada policies;
- Maintain a donor file;
- Respond to reservations and inquiries and provide confirmations, as required;
- Assist Curator with outreach programs and conduct presentations, as required;
- Conduct tours, as required;
- Develop storylines and themes and organize displays and exhibitions;
- Coordinate the storage of collections and set up of displays and exhibitions;
- Supervise the work of volunteers;
- Overnight travel of no more than a week may be required. The museum will furnish transportation and reimburse expenses.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications
- University degree in Museology, History or in a related field;
- Minimum three years of experience in museums, carrying duties in the following areas:
- administration, preventative conservation, collection management, personnel administration and overseeing volunteers;
- Degree or diploma in graphic design, visual communications, fine arts, or related field
- Minimum 4 years of design-related work experience;
- Familiar with the history of the Logistics Branch and military logistics trades;
- Some knowledge of CAF equipment and paraphernalia;
- Possess the necessary computer, colour printer and all the software for fulfilling the work described in line with today’s museum exhibit design standards;
- Intermediate written, spoken and reading knowledge is required in both official languages.


Required Graphics Experience:
- Must have extensive knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator;
- Hold a strong portfolio of work demonstrating a high degree of creativity, diversity, and productivity particularly in the design and setting of exhibitions;
- Must have experience in print such as marketing materials, museum signage, travelling exhibits and brochures;
- Demonstrated experience overseeing artwork and print production.


Required Museum Experience:

Must have knowledge of:
- the use of a museum narrative plot through exhibitions to convey main, secondary; ideas and support stories, considering constraints and demands of a given exhibition;
- activities, function and the organization of museums;
- regulations, policies and practices governing museum administration;
- project management.

Total value, before GST and QST of $42,000, payable in monthly installments pending satisfactory progress.
