DESCRIPTION

STATEMENT OF WORK

Organization:
The Canadian Forces Logistics Museum is a small 450 sq m (4,500 sq ft) museum located on CFB Montreal in Montreal’s east end.

The project: The Museum is in the process of designing and realizing a 12m (40’) showcase of the history of the Logistics Branch since 1968.

We are currently looking for a contractor to fulfill the duties of freelance Writer and Digital Exhibit Project Coordinator. The Coordinator must work in collaboration with the Curator and the Assistant Curator / Graphic Designer.

Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Canadian Forces Logistics Museum Curator the Writer and Digital Exhibit Project Coordinator will:

• Complete any research as needed for the Logistics Branch 50th anniversary Mobile Museum;

• Develop exhibit story boards for the digital exhibit stations;

• Write the English version of the interpretive text for the exhibits and oversee their translation to French;

• Provide a selection of photos, images and videos as needed, and in the appropriate digital formats, as well as copyright approvals as necessary;

• Write photo captions in English and oversee their translation into French;

• Script digital exhibit presentations assuring their accessibility to a wide range of visitors;

• Coordinate all necessary aspects of video editing for the multimedia exhibits;

• Engage in all aspects of procurement of a shipping container/mobile office including:

o gathering all specification necessary for the modification of the container to house the travelling museum;

o Source suppliers and obtain quotes for the shipping container;

• Maintain current and appropriate professional knowledge of relevant digital exhibit technology and design;

• Gather technical information regarding multimedia exhibit technologies including hardware, software, and equipment installation options for the mobile museum;

• Provide the Museum Curator with recommendations on such technologies and equipment, as well as assist him with the procurement;

• Negotiate and obtain three proposals from digital exhibit designer services to produce the multimedia exhibit stations;

• Facilitate the creation of hands-on exhibit interactives;

• Assure the digital exhibit presentations meet basic museum standards for universal accessibility;

• Oversee the preparation and quality control of the computers for the Mobile Museum, including backup equipment;

• Coordinate and monitor internal and external service providers engaged in all phases of the digital exhibit stations from conceptual development to physical delivery and installation;

• Occasionally assist the Curator with producing presentations and reports related to the Mobile Museum project and for its promotion;

• Keep records of the multimedia exhibit portion of the project budget, and provide regular progress reports to the internal project team;

• Travel (approx. 10% of the contract) at own expense to Ottawa to conduct some research and possibly meet with suppliers;

• Conduct dry-run of at least one week of all multimedia stations once they are installed in the mobile museum local.


Qualifications
• Basic knowledge of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF);

• A general knowledge of the history CAF Logistics Branch;

• Experienced in historical research ;

• Experienced writing interpretive texts;

• Strong computer skills specifically with Win 7 and 10, as well as with Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Google Drive and Dropbox;

• Minimum bachelor's in History, museum studies or a related field;

• Very good knowledge of digital exhibit equipment, especially multi-touch monitors;

• Strong office communication skills;

• Be highly organized;

• Proven interpretive text writing skills in English (and French an asset);

• Fluent in spoken English and French; Excellent written English; Very good written French;

• Experience in developing digital projects in a museum environment;

• Be familiar with the basic universal accessibility standards for museum exhibitions;

• Some demonstrated project management experience;

• Experience as a museum interpreter/guide, or as an educator preferable;

• Familiar with using CMS an asset.

• Familiar with the Logistics Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) including logistics trades;

• Knowledge of CAF equipment and paraphernalia;

• Eligible for passing basic security clearance;

• Flexibility to travel within Quebec and Ontario for up to a week to assist with the quality control and troubleshooting of the mobile museum. The museum would provide the transportation and reimburse the other basic travel expenses.

Project completion and delays:

This is a short-term contract beginning 16 October and ending 1 July 2019,
Total value, before GST and QST of $36,500, payable in monthly installments pending satisfactory progress.
