Return to «excellent» for the Ontario Index due to the creation of 52,200 jobs

A total of 52,200 new jobs were created in the province of Ontario in September. This strong performance, coupled with the one for the previous month (+ 14,000), compensates for the losses in June and July (-42,800). The Ontario Index has thus increased by 14.8 points in October, settling at 93.5 %. Based upon this data, le level of “excellent” has been bestowed again after having been downgraded in July 2008.

The services-producing sector posted the strongest results in September, with the creation of 44,200 jobs. This strong increase is mainly associated to four sub-sectors: Healthcare and social assistance (+ 23,000 new jobs), Transportation and warehousing (+ 21,800), Commerce (+ 10,500) and Corporate services, Business, building and other support services (+ 4,200). However, these gains were offset by losses in the following: Professional, scientific and technical Services (-11,300), Accommodation and food services (-7,100), Educational services (-5,300), Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (-1,600) and Information, culture and recreation (-1,400).

The goods-producing sector has also reported increases: + 8,100 jobs overall. Manufacturing (+ 9,800) and Agriculture (+ 7,800) have performed well, but Utilities (-6,800), Construction (-2,300) and the sub-sector of Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas (-400) saw decreases.

Over the past 12 months, employment has grown by 1.7 % in the province. This month’s Index ranks 6th out of 120, meaning there were 84 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From September 1998 to September 2008, employment in this province has risen by 22 %.

Ottawa-Gatineau region: 97 % — Excellent
In September, this CMA has seen the addition of 500 jobs, which brings the total of newly-created jobs to 12,500 in the region over five consecutive months. However, the Ottawa-Gatineau Index is down 0.8 points at 97 % though still hovering at the excellent mark, in light of data compiled by Statistics Canada over the past 10 years, which show a downwards trend in job creation in this province during the month of October.

Over the past 12 months, employment in this Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) has grown by 2.4 %. This month’s Index ranks 1st out of 120, meaning there were 119 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From September 1998 to September 2008, employment in this region has risen by 32 %.


Toronto region: 23.7 % — Unfavourable
In October, this CMA has created 1,100 jobs, putting an end to the fall that occurred over the course of the previous three months (-45,600 jobs). This allows the Jobboom Index to increase by 3.9 points in October for this region. However, this does not allow the region’s mark to exit the “unfavourable” level.

Over the past 12 months, employment in the Toronto region has grown by 1.8 %. This month’s Index ranks 110th out of 120, meaning there were ten months with weaker indices over the past ten years. From September 1998 to September 2008, employment in this CMA has risen by 25 %.
