Quebec's Index strengthens its position for a sixth consecutive month


Quebec gained 15,500 jobs over the past month according to Statistics Canada. The latest gains, following increases of 14,500 and 9,600 over the two previous months, have resulted in a 2.3-point climb in the Jobboom Index forecast for October. New positions were created mostly in the manufacturing and public administration sectors. They are in effect compensating for a relatively weak first quarter. Year-to-date job creation now stands at 50,600.

The Jobboom Index measures job market strength compared to the previous 120 months. This month's Index ranks 1st out of 120. In other words, over the past ten years, there were 119 months with weaker Indices. From September 1994 to September 2004, the number of jobs in Quebec grew by 20 percent, from 3,114,000 to 3,732,500.

Census Metropolitan Area highlights (CMA)
Jobboom Index forecasts are up in many of the Census Metropolitan Areas for the month of October: Sherbrooke at 93.8 percent, following a minor increase (+0.8), Ottawa-Gatineau at 78.9 percent with a more substantial climb (+3.1), Quebec at 75.8 percent, with a small gain (+1.5), and Trois-Rivières at 47 percent, but showing an important leap of 10.2 points. Results for Montreal remain practically unchanged at 84.5 percent, with a slight drop (-0.6). The Saguenay CMA, however, reports a drop of 7.3 points for October, reflecting the loss of 1,000 jobs over the last month, adding to 1,100 lost jobs over the preceding period, as reported by Statistics Canada.
