Employment improves slightly in Quebec


Quebec gained 16,100 jobs last month following losses of 7,800 over the previous period. The performance has allowed the province to consolidate gains of 58,000 positions in June, July and August that helped offset the loss of 42,000 jobs from February to May.

Job losses were mostly felt in the manufacturing sector (− 1,800) while job creation was reported in the services sector (+ 17,800), primarily in professional, scientific and technical services as well as in health care and social assistance. Year-to-date net job creation remains positive (+ 40,000) with a growth rate of 1.1 per cent. Employment growth for the past 12 months was 0.7 per cent with a net total of 27,600 new jobs.
