Jobboom Index for November

First drop in seven months below the 90 percent mark


Quebec lost 11,800 jobs over the past month according to Statistics Canada, virtually cancelling out the previous month’s employment gains of 15,500. This month’s forecast is also affected by the historical patterns of the past ten years indicating a lack of job creation for this time of the year. Last month’s losses were concentrated mainly in manufacturing, (clothing, food products, computers and electronic equipment). Year-to-date job creation in Quebec now stands at 38,800.

The Jobboom Index measures job market strength compared to the previous 120 months. This month’s Index ranks 9th out of 120. In other words, over the past ten years, there were 111 months with weaker Indices. From October 1994 to October 2004, the number of jobs in Quebec grew by 19 percent, from 3,117,000 to 3,720,700.

Census Metropolitan Area highlights (CMA)
With the exception of Quebec City, Jobboom Indices for November are down in all CMAs. Indeed, this month’s forecast for the Quebec City metropolitan area is up by 4.7 points thanks to 3,200 jobs created over the past month. In March 2004, Quebec City’s employment status was considered “fair” with a Jobboom Index of 51.4 percent. Since then, the region’s employment status has risen to “favourable” with an Index forecast of 80.5 percent.

Meanwhile, despite a drop of 8.6 points in this month’s forecast, Sherbrooke continues to top the list of Quebec metropolitan areas with a Jobboom Index of 85.2 percent
