Index forecast increases in Ontario


Ontario’s Jobboom Index climbs 4.2 points this month following the creation of 32,800 jobs in October, a better performance than the meagre 4,700 jobs created in September. Compared over the past 120 months, November’s Index ranks 8th, with 112 months with lesser Indices. The total number of jobs in Ontario now stands at 6,373,900. Over the past 10 years, from October 1994 to October 2004, employment has increased by 25 percent.

Toronto’s Regional Index: 79.3 percent
Toronto’s forecast reflects the loss of 5,500 jobs in October, adding to losses of 14,000 over the previous period. Thus, this month’s Index is down by 3.9 points. These latest results add to the downward trend reported for Toronto, whose employment status has dropped to “favourable” from that of “excellent” (from July to September 2004). This month’s Jobboom Index ranks 42nd out of 120, leaving 78 months with lesser Indices over the past ten years. From October 1994 to October 2004, the number of jobs in Toronto has increased from 2,019,300 to 2,755,700—an increase of 36 percent.

Ottawa-Gatineau’s Regional Index: 77.6 percent
November’s Jobboom Index for Ottawa-Gatineau drops by a slight 1.3 points following a month of zero employment growth. This month’s Index ranks 22nd out of 120, leaving 98 months with lesser Indices over the past ten years. From October 1994 to October 2004, the number of jobs in the regions increased from 499,000 to 619,500—an increase of 24 percent.
