Quebec Index not straying far from “excellent” level


Quebec’s Jobboom Index for the month of March drops by 1.1 percent to 88.6. After gaining 14,700 jobs in January, the province lost 5,100 in February. Over the past six months, however, Quebec’s employment tally is nonetheless positive, with 32,400 new positions created since September 2006.

Last month’s losses were mostly found in the goods-producing sector (-29,800), particularly in manufacturing (-33,100). Meanwhile, construction (+ 8,500) fared relatively well. Overall however, the services sector came out a winner in February with 24,700 new jobs, mainly in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 9,900) and in business, building and other support services (+ 8,700). Losses, however, were reported in educational services (-8,400). Over the past 12 months, employment in Quebec grew by 1.3 percent.
