Jobboom Index for March

Index remains stable despite 6,000 new jobs

For a second consecutive month, Ontario’s Jobboom Index remains “favourable” at 86.4 percent. This unchanged result reflects a modest employment gain of 6,000 jobs in February. In comparison, the province gained 41,600 positions in December of last year. Since November, 74,300 new jobs were created in Ontario, largely offsetting the loss of 36,700 jobs from July to October 2006.

Last month’s gains (+ 7,700) were found mostly in the services sector. Transportation and warehousing (+ 9,500) along with finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 10,800) were among the strongest performers, while losses were reported in the trade industry (-12 500) as well as in accommodation and food services (-7,100). Meanwhile, the goods-producing sector suffered a net employment loss (-1,700), mostly due to layoffs in agriculture (-5,500). Utilities, however, reported gains (+ 3,100).
