Weak job creation leads to modest Index increase


The province of Québec gained 3,700 jobs over the past month. While new jobs were insufficient to compensate for losses in the previous period (− 8,700), this month’s Index reports a 0.5 per cent increase. Employment in Québec remains stable, as it has been since the beginning of the year, with a forecast status of “favourable”.

While manufacturing employment suffered losses, the Québec’s goods producing sector reported new jobs in agriculture and construction. The services sector contributed to 1,000 of the province’s 3,700 new jobs, mostly in educational services and in trade. From February 2005 to February 2006, employment in Québec grew by 1.2 per cent.

The Jobboom Index measures job market strength compared to the previous 120 months. This month’s Index ranks 24th out of 120, meaning there were 96 months with lesser Indices over the past 10 years. From February 1996 to February 2006, employment in Québec grew by 18 per cent.
