Quebec Index loses ground with the loss of 19,800 jobs

Quebec lost a total of 19,800 jobs in April 2008. As such, the Quebec Index has dropped 4.5 percentage points, causing it to lose its excellent status obtained over the past three months. This Index would have registered further losses had it not been for employment data compiled by Statistics Canada showing an upward trend in job creation for this region during the month of May.

The province’s services-producing sector fared the worse in April with a net loss of 21,500 positions, with major losses reported in the following sub-sectors: Professional, scientific and technical services (-9,200), Health care and social assistance
(-8,000), Finances, insurance, real estate and leasing (-4,100), Business, building and other support services (-4,100) and Accommodation and food services. Meanwhile, gains were reported in Transportation and warehousing (+ 6,200), Public administration (+ 5,000), Trade (+ 1,200) and Educational services (+ 1,200).

The goods-producing sector created a total of 1,800 jobs in April, with the following sub-sectors posting gains: Construction (+ 5,100), Manufacturing (+ 3,900) and Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas (+ 300). These gains offset losses registered in Agriculture (-6,200) and Utilities (-1,300).

Over the past 12 months, employment in Quebec has grown by 0.7 %.

The Jobboom Index measures job market strength on a monthly basis and compares this performance over the past 120 months. This month’s index ranks 11th out of 120, meaning there were 109 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From April 1998 to April 2008, employment in this CMA has grown by 19 %.
