Quebec Jobboom Index climbs again

With reported losses of only 2,200 positions in May, according to Statistics Canada, employment in Quebec saw little change. These losses, however, haven’t slowed the climb of the province’s Jobboom Index. This month’s Index gains 1.4 points based on the strength of Quebec’s job creation record for this time of year, over the past 10 years. The result: Quebec’s Jobboom Index has achieved its highest level for 2007 at 96.9 percent.

The services sector, which performed well over the previous period, suffered a net loss of 12,700 jobs in May. Trade was hardest hit (-25,400) while gains were reported in accommodation and food services (+ 13,900) and in information, culture and recreation (+ 6,100).

This latest loss is a definite improvement compared to the 9,600 layoffs suffered over the previous period.

The Jobboom Index measures job market strength over the past 120 months. This month’s Index ranks 1st out of 120, meaning there were 120 months with lesser Indices over the last 10 years. From May 1997 to May 2007, employment in Quebec grew by 20 percent.
