The goods-producing sector succeeded in posting gains in June with 7,900 new jobs, the majority of which were reported in Manufacturing (+ 5,300). Forestry, fishing mining, oil, mining and gas (+ 1,500) and Agriculture (+ 1,000) also contributed to the overall gains. Meanwhile, Construction reported minor losses (-200).
The services-producing sector is responsible for the majority of the 31,800 losses reported in Ontario in June. Major losses were reported in Business, building and other support services (-20,400), Health care and social assistance (-16,900), Educational services (-9,800) and Public administration (-9,300). Meanwhile, Professional, scientific and technical services (+ 18,600) and Transportation and warehousing (+ 14,200) helped offset the impact. Over the past 12 months, employment in Ontario has grown by 1.7 %. This month’s Jobboom Index ranks 17th in 120, meaning there were 103 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From June 1998 to June 2008, employment in this province has grown by 22 %. Ottawa-Gatineau region: 94.6 % — Excellent This region made substantial headway with the creation of 4,800 jobs in June, consolidating the previous month’s gain of 700 new jobs and offsetting the losses registered since December 2007. The Ottawa-Gatineau index is up 5.3 points, bringing it to the excellent mark at 94.6 %. Over the past 12 months, employment in this Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) has grown by 3.7 %. This month’s index ranks 3rd out of 120, meaning there were 117 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From June 1998 to June 2008, employment in this CMA has grown by 28 %. Toronto region: 59.3 % — Fair The Toronto CMA lost a total of 11,300 jobs in June, offsetting the balance of the four preceding months, over which a total of 59,100 new jobs were created. As such, the Toronto index is down 16.2 points, dropping from the favourable to fair mark. Over the past 12 months, employment in the Toronto region has grown by 2.9 %. This month’s index ranks 50th out of 120, meaning there were 70 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From June 1998 to June 2008, employment in this CMA has increased by 27 %.
