The services sector saw the bulk of last month’s job creation (+ 27,600), mostly in business, building and other support services (+ 11,200), professional, scientific and technical services (+ 9,300) and in public administration (+ 8,800). Educational services (+ 7,900), finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 6,800) as well as health care and social assistance (+ 5,900) also did well. On the other hand, losses were reported in trade (-9,900) as well as in accommodation and food services (-6,400).

Ottawa-Gatineau region: 80.8 % — Favourable The Ottawa-Gatineau Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) created 2,300 jobs in June, adding to the 13,700 positions it had created over the four previous months. Recovery is slow in this region, which lost 24,100 jobs from September 2006 to January 2007. Nonetheless, this CMA’s index remains “favourable” with a 1.5-point increase to 80.8 %. However, over the past 12 months, employment in the Ottawa-Gatineau region has dropped by 0.8 %. This month’s index ranks 10th out of 120, meaning there were 110 months with lower indices over the last 120 months. In the last 10 years, employment in this CMA has grown by 30 %. Toronto region: 55.6 % — Fair The Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) added 900 jobs to its economy in June — a number hardly sufficient to compensate for the loss of 13,700 jobs over the three previous periods. As a result, this month’s index drops 2 points to 55.6 % and remains “fair”. Since March, this index has lost 12.1 points. Despite this drop, employment has grown by 1.8 % over the past 12 months. This month’s index ranks 61st out of 120, meaning there were 59 months with lower indices over the past 10 years. From 1997 to 2007, employment in the Toronto region has grown by 28 %.
