Ontario's Index climbs 2.4 points with 17,700 new jobs in June


Ontario's Jobboom Index forecast climbs once again for July (+2.4 points) with the creation of 17,700 jobs in June and the addition of 30,800 and 14,300 positions over the two previous months. Over the past year, as of June 2003, employment in the province grew by 2 percent. Compared to the previous 120 months, July's Index ranks 2nd, which leaves 118 months with weaker Indices over the past 10 years. The total number of jobs in Ontario now stands at 6,346,600. Over the past decade, from June 1994 to June 2004, employment in Ontario grew by 27 percent.

Toronto's Regional Index: 90.2 percent — Excellent
This third consecutive increase of Toronto's Jobboom Index (+5.9 points) reflects the creation of 21,500 jobs in June, following the addition of 12,700 and 14,500 positions over the two previous months. Compared to the past 120 months, July's Index is ranked 18th, ahead of 102 months with weaker Indices. From June 1994 to June 2004, the number of jobs in the region rose from 2,008,000 to 2,760,500—an increase of 37 percent.

Ottawa-Gatineau's Regional Index: 72.9 percent — Fair
Ottawa-Gatineau's Jobboom Index is up 2.9 points, reflecting the creation of 2,500 jobs in June, adding to 1,300 jobs created over the previous month. The region's Index, however, continues to suffer from insufficient job creation since the fall of 2003. This month's Index ranks 24th out of 120, ahead of 96 months with weaker Indices over the past 10 years. The number of jobs in the region has grown from 506,300 to 609,900 from June 1994 to June 2004—a 20 percent increase over the past 10 years.
