Jobboom Index for January

Ontario’s Jobboom Index climbs again!

With the creation of 41,600 new jobs in December, a total of 60,700 positions were added to Ontario’s economy during the last two months of 2006. This positive result managed to offset the loss of 36,700 jobs over the four previous months. As a result, this month’s Jobboom Index for Ontario climbs 4.2 points to the “favourable” level of 86 percent.

This second month of catch-up is largely due to strong job creation in the services sector (+ 26,200) as well as in the goods-producing sector (+ 15,400). Health care and social assistance (+ 12,200), educational services (+ 11,600) and information, culture and recreation (+ 8,400) had the highest job creation figures among the service sector industries. Meanwhile, construction (+ 7,800), manufacturing (+ 3,800) and agriculture (+ 3,900) performed well among the top three goods-producing industries.
