Jobboom Index for January
Employment unchanged to start the year
Quebec lost 3,600 jobs over the past month, pushing down the Jobboom Index further for the first month of 2005. Losses were found mostly in the retail and wholesale trade sector and in the transportation and warehousing sector.
In comparison, the province began 2004 with a Jobboom Index below the “excellent” mark (90 percent) where it remained for several months. In May 2004, Quebec reclaimed its “excellent” employment status until the month of October.

Last year, a total of 37,000 jobs were created in Quebec, representing an increase of 1 percent. While Quebec’s employment growth falls short of the national average (+1.4), it nonetheless represents an increase for the province compared to 2003 (+0.6).
The Jobboom Index measures job market strength compared to the previous 120 months. This month’s Index ranks 16th out of 120. In other words, over the past ten years, there were 104 months with weaker Indices. From December 1994 to December 2004, the number of jobs in Quebec grew by 19 percent, from 3,134,100 to 3,718,900.
