Jobboom Index for February
Quebec regains “excellent” employment status with 7,200 new jobs
The creation of 7,200 new jobs in Quebec in January managed to offset two thirds of the layoffs announced in December. This recovery, combined with the province’s slightly positive job growth for the month of February (as measured over the past 10 years), has enabled Quebec to reclaim the “excellent” employment status lost in January after a month at the “favourable” level.
Over the past month, the goods-producing sector has fared better than the services sector with a net creation of 10,300 jobs. And, with the exception of the natural resources sector (-500), all goods-producing sub-sectors reported gains: construction (+ 4,800), manufacturing (+ 3,700), agriculture (+ 2,300) and utilities (+ 100).

Meanwhile, Quebec’s services sector showed a net loss of 3,100 positions in January, with losses reported in health care and social assistance (-10,300), trade (-7,800), educational services (-2,700), and information and culture and recreation (-500) and gains made in business, building and other support services (+ 4,100), transportation and warehousing (+ 2,900), public administration (+ 2,900), professional, scientific and technical services (+ 2,400), and finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 2,200).
Over the past year, employment in Quebec has grown by 2.3 %.
The Jobboom Index measures job market strength on a monthly basis and compares this performance over the past 120 months. This month’s index ranks 5th out of 120, meaning there were 115 months with weaker indices over the past 10 years. From January 1998 to January 2008, employment in Quebec has grown by 21 %.
