Jobboom Index for December

Province maintains “favourable” employment status despite weak job creation

Following losses of 11,800 jobs in October, Quebec gained 1,800 over the past month according to Statistics Canada—too small an increase to prevent a slight drop in this month’s Jobboom Index (-0.7). December’s forecast is also influenced by the historical pattern of the past ten years showing a decline in job creation for this time of the year. For the most part, new jobs were created in the Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing sector as well as in the Trade services sector. Year-to-date job creation in Quebec now stands at 40,600.

Census Metropolitan Area highlights (CMA)
This month’s regional forecasts are down in all CMAs with the exception of Ottawa-Gatineau, claiming the lead ahead of Sherbrooke, and of Trois-Rivières. Ottawa-Gatineau’s Index jumps ahead 7 points mainly as a result of 7,100 new positions created in November. Meanwhile, Montreal suffers its 5th consecutive drop (-2.1) since April, with a year-to-date employment deficit of 11,500 jobs.
