The Jobboom Index Set at 0 % for the Second Month

In March, Ontario was once again impacted by bad news, but not as spectacular as the news since last autumn. Nearly 10,800 jobs were cut last month. Overall, 172,300 jobs were lost since October 2008. The Ontario Index being already set at 0 % since March remains at the lowest possible level again for April.

The most notable job losses occurred in the Goods-producing sector (-18,800 jobs). The negative numbers from Manufacturing (-24,100) and Agriculture (-3,500) were balanced on the overall sheet by increases in Construction (+ 4,100), Utilities (+ 3,200) and Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas (+ 1,600).

The Services sector reported a positive balance sheet in March with the creation of 8,000 jobs. The positive performances are especially related to the sub-sectors of Commerce (+ 8,700), Healthcare and social assistance (+ 8,500), Corporate services, Business, building and other support services (+ 4,600), Transportation and warehousing (+ 2,600), Public administration (+ 1,000), and Other services (+ 11,900). Other areas did not fair as well: Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (-16,800), Educational services
(-4,600), Professional, scientific and technical services (-3,900), Accommodation and food services (-3,400) and Information, culture and recreation (-800).

Over the past 12 months, employment has decreased by 2 % in the province. This month’s Index ranks 120th out of 120, meaning there were no other months with a weaker index over the past 10 years. From March 1999 to March 2009, employment in this province has nevertheless increased by 17 %.
