The Jobboom Index Set at 0 % for the Fifth Straight Month

Ontario enjoyed some stability during the past month with the creation of 1,300 jobs after having witnessed the loss of 235,000 jobs from October 2998 to May 2009. However, under the month of June’s apparent status quo hides an increase in part-time jobs, according to Statistics Canada in its latest Labour Force Survey. The Ontario Index already set at 0 % remains unchanged for July.

In June, the Goods-producing sector saw the creation of 6,600 new jobs, all sub-sectors included. The sub-sectors with a positive balance sheet are Construction (+ 5,700), Agriculture (+ 2,000) and Manufacturing (+ 900). However, the Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas (-1,800) and Utilities (-300) sub-sectors reported losses.

The increases in the Goods-producing sector are counterbalanced by losses in the Services sector (-5,400 jobs). There were increases in several sub-sectors: Information, culture and recreation (+ 8,900 jobs), Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 8,100), Healthcare and social assistance (+ 5,900), Educational services (+ 5,800), Corporate services, Business, building and other support services (+ 5,600), and Commerce (+ 3,000). However, the losses are greater: Accommodation and food services (-14,100), Public administration (-9,600), Transportation and warehousing (-8,700), Other services (-6,200), and Professional, scientific and technical services (-4,000).

Toronto region: 0 % — Unfavourable
In June, this CMA lost 2,100 jobs bringing the 2009 total to 31,800 jobs lost. Therefore, the Jobboom Index remains at 0 % for the fifth consecutive month.

Over the past 12 months, employment has decreased by 1.9 % in the region. This month’s Index ranks 120th out of 120, meaning there were no other months with a weaker index over the past 10 years. From 1999 to 2009, employment in this region has nevertheless increased by 20 %.
