Jobboom Index for February
The Jobboom Index Increases Slightly due to the Creation of 6,200 jobs
Quebec saw the creation of 6,200 new jobs in January 2010. The Jobboom Index thus increases by 2.8 points, aided by the trend that has been observed over the past ten years, which reveals that employment usually increases during the month of February. Therefore, the index settles at 51.1 %, pulling itself out of the “unfavourable” level, where it fell to four months ago.
In January, all the sub-sectors under the Goods-producing sector yielded negative employment balance sheets. Overall, the sub-sectors reported losses of 13,200 jobs: 5,200 in Manufacturing, 2,900 in Construction, 2,800 in Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas, 1,600 in Utilities, and 700 in Agriculture.

The Services sector compensated with the creation of 19,200 new jobs. The sub-sectors of Business, building and other support services (+ 8,900), Public administration (+ 8,800), Accommodation and food services (+ 6,100) and Other services (+ 9,100) reported the most important increases, followed by Information, culture and recreation (+ 3,300), Healthcare and social assistance (+ 2,900), and Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+ 2,100). However, losses were significant in the Educational services (-9,200) and most notably, in three other sub-sectors: Commerce (-4,300), Professional, scientific and technical services (-4,300), and Transportation and warehousing (-4,200).
Employment in Quebec has increased by 0.4 % over the past year and by 13 % over the course of the past ten years.
