Reporting to the Project Design Supervisor, the incumbent, working in a team environment of professors, staff and students, performs routine and specialized tasks requiring the use of advanced research and teaching equipment such as heavy load compression and tensile testing machines. He/she acts as a resource person for staff, faculty and students with respect to technological and safety matters.
Maintain BCEE laboratory equipment and facilities - limited to Materials, Structures, Soil, Foundation, Water Resources and Surveying.
Support the laboratory instructors and researchers and focus on the critical issues in the laboratories operations and safety.
Demonstrate and supervise the use of civil engineering laboratory equipment to students.
As a Safety Officer and Emergency Responder, instruct, supervise and monitor safety procedures for the BCEE heavy laboratories.
Supervise the preparation, fabrication and testing of various components for teaching and research projects in civil engineering laboratories.
Assist undergraduate and graduate students with their projects.
Work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty, which may include additional duties and responsibilities.
Diploma of Collegial studies (3 year technical DEC) in an area related to the primary responsibilities or a certificate of completion from an accredited Civil Engineering Technology or other related technical program with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
Understanding of civil engineering terminology, laboratory process and typical equipment.
Demonstrated experience in civil engineering design and construction practices.
Knowledge of ASTM material standards and load testing standards desirable.
Ability to use technical laboratory equipment. Prior work experience in civil engineering laboratories is an asset.
Ability to solve complex technical problems.
Good knowledge of spoken English (Level 4) to assist and instruct students. Spoken French is an asset.
Basic knowledge of Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets and ability to learn and adapt to new software as the need arises.
Physical ability to crawl, crouch and climb on a regular basis and to maintain laboratory equipment and facilities, as attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to University’s satisfaction.
