Technology works as a strategic partner with Morgan Stanley business units and the world's leading technology companies to redefine how we do business in ever more global, complex, and dynamic financial markets. Morgan Stanley's sizeable investment in technology results in quantitative trading systems, cutting-edge modelling and simulation software, comprehensive risk and security systems, and robust client-relationship capabilities, plus the worldwide infrastructure that forms the backbone of these systems and tools. Our insights, our applications and infrastructure give a competitive edge to clients' businesses—and to our own.
Institutional Securities Technology (IST) develops and oversees the overall technology strategy and bespoke technology solutions to drive and enable the Institutional businesses and enterprise-wide functions. Our clients include Fixed Income, Equities, Commodities, Investment Banking, Research and Global Capital Markets as well as Operations, HR and Corporate Services.
We have an opening for an established Java developer with an interest in high performance systems and the financial industry to join our established cross asset client allocation development team in Montreal.
Our area (Trade Enrichment, Data, Reporting and Allocations) sits downstream of sales and trading, but is still client facing and so confronts many of the same challenges of the trading world (client visibility, timeliness, low tolerance for instability) while also needing a very flexible design to enable one system to process a wide range of businesses, in terms of region, products, business models and users. Our global allocation system is stateful and time critical, composed of a farm of large multi component java xml brokers, Sybase and DB2 databases, and a realtime C# .NET GUI. The system processes the majority of worldwide equity and fixed income businesses, plus a small amount of more diverse flow on an 150 plus machine plant at a peak rate of 3000+ msgs/sec (10 million messages a day).
We are looking for someone with established java development skills but who is business/user focused and has an interest in solving not just technology challenges, but logical and business problems. Working with users, system integration, planning, testing and deployment can take as much time as much as the coding in this role. However as you can see from the numbers above scale and capacity are ongoing challenges and we are looking for candidates with a genuine enthusiasm for and understanding of high performance technology and the flexibility to mix development on simple and complex business requests with technology driven projects around capacity, scale and robustness. In return we offer a friendly, high profile, well integrated and transparent global team containing several business and java experts, a great network across multiple IT and business departments and excellent exposure to business knowledge across a wide range of products and operational processes.
You will work closely with technology teams, operations staff and your global colleagues to manage rollouts of new financial products onto our existing system, implement user enhancements ranging from 1 day to 6 month plus projects, design and implement components for new flows such as swaps or emerging markets and deliver technical enhancements and new engines to keep on top of our ever growing capacity, resiliency and flexibility needs. The role is flexible and depending on the successful candidates skill-set and interests can involve a greater loading of business facing work, or technology projects.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant experience
- Knowledge of the following:
- Bachelor degree in a relevant field
- Previous finance experience
- MQ or alternatives
- DB2 or Sybase exposure
- Perl/Bash/Ksh scripting
- Experience working with global teams
- Excellent communication skills
Morgan Stanley is an equal opportunities employer. We work to provide a supportive and inclusive environment where all individuals can maximize their full potential.
