The Canal Services Technician - Electrical performs regular maintenance tasks to ensure the safe and efficient passage of vessels through the locks and supports operations related to passage of ships by operating structures when necessary. His/her role is also to minimize disruptions to navigation and the normal functioning of structures caused by electrical breakdowns.
HIGHLIGHT OF DUTIES :
•Support all activities related to the passage of vessels and lockage from Limit of Approach (LA in / LA out) including operating lock structures, monitoring water levels, vessel positioning & movements, vessel condition and recording all transit data;
•Completes and records appropriately all work orders related to preventative maintenance and acts as first responder to breakdowns in related trade, as well as assist other trades in the completion of maintenance tasks;
•Assists in a transit by handling mooring lines and securing ships in lock chamber or approach walls;
•Performs all tasks related to general housekeeping of the lock areas;
•Applies safe work methods at all times and;
•Performs other related duties as required.
•Secondary school education and post-secondary studies in electricity;
•Certificate of Qualification in electricity;
•Restricted Radio – Telephone Certificate;
•Two to five (2-5) years of experience in an industrial environment maintaining electrical equipment;
•Knowledge of PLC, control systems, VFD and networks;
•Completion of Canal Structures Operator training program;
•Working knowledge of relevant operational and safe working practices and procedures;
•Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in both official languages;
•Ability to utilize relevant computer programs, such as MS windows operating system & MS Office software;
•Ability to meet the applicable security clearance from Transport Canada;
•Ability to meet physical demands and safety sensitive requirements;
•Valid class “3” driver’s license in Quebec and an insurable driving record.
•Demonstrated ability to:
◦Operate lock and bridge controls in proper sequence;
◦Read and understand technical and operational manuals, drawings and specifications;
◦Diagnose various electrical problems;
•Ability to adapt to technological changes to SLSMC structures;
•Aptitude to work as a member of a team environment.
Candidates selected for interviews will be given a technical test as a Control Systems Electrician and power line test.
