Every month, Jobboom profiles an employer that is a leader in their industry to shed some light on the business cultures, staffing needs and recruitment methods of top organizations. This month we look at Stanley Black and Decker.
Stanley Black and Decker is a global leader in the manufacture and distribution of industrial and domestic tools, and is also a provider of residential and commercial security solutions. The company and its affiliates have a presence in markets around the world and enjoy an enviable reputation in their industries. Stanley Black and Decker employ close to 500 people in Quebec and count more than 50,000 employees globally.
We sat down with Caroline Benoit, Human Resources manager for Stanley Black and Decker Canada Corp.
JOBBOOM What kinds of employment are available with Stanley Black and Decker?
Caroline Benoit We operate three major divisions in Canada: our security division, tools and accessories, and our industrial production division.
As a result, we have many kinds of jobs on offer. We have employees in administration, finance, sales, marketing, customer service, distribution, alarm system monitoring, technical support, project management and manufacturing.
In Quebec, our employees are divided into different working locations: two monitoring centers (in Montreal and Quebec City), our manufacturing facilities (in Saint-Hyacinthe and Montreal), and our administrative offices in Montreal, Saint-Laurent and Quebec City. We also have several remote employees working from locations across the province.
JOBBOOM What are your primary staffing needs at the moment?
C.B. Several of our divisions will be expanding in 2016. Accordingly, we are actively looking for sales representatives, especially for Microtec, our security services division.
Besides that, we regularly have openings in our manufacturing facilities and in customer service for positions in our call centers or monitoring centers. We are also seeking client retention specialists. These are entry-level jobs that can lead to supervisory positions or team leader positions over time.
JOBBOOM What kind of career paths are possible for employees of Stanley Black and Decker?
C.B. At Stanley Black and Decker we are very focused on values: integrity, hard work, loyalty, vision, openness and flexibility are all important to us. These are qualities that we look for in candidates when we are recruiting.
Because we offer a variety of jobs in multiple fields, the skills and competencies we look for vary from one position to the next. The only constant is change; every day we strive to adapt to the needs of our clients. I would say that the common denominator that we expect from all of our employees is a positive attitude about change. Each individual needs to have this capacity, as well as a desire to be a part of the solution.
JOBBOOM What makes people enjoy working at Stanley Black and Decker?
C.B. We are a company that has grown by acquiring small companies, and this means that despite the global nature of Stanley Black and Decker, each division has maintained their small-business spirit and convivial family feel. Everywhere in the company there is a strong amiability between managers and employees. Even with more than 18,000 employees in North America, we make sure that our personnel don’t feel like they are just numbers.
We put a lot of effort into nurturing a team spirit and motivating our employees. For example, we have a “thank you” program which encourages employees to point out great work being done by their colleagues. This recognition is accompanied by a certificate signed by a director at the company and a cash bonus, the amount of which is dependent on the nature of the accomplishment.
We also operate an internal web site where employees can keep up to date about news and activities happening in other lines of business. Despite the physical distance between some of our employees, this helps to instill in them a sense of belonging and pride to be a part of the company.
