RETIREMENT CRISIS
Facing the new reality of retirement
"Oh baloney!" the old folks used to say. Now, many Canadian Boomers are facing stormy seas rather than smooth sailing conditions in their retirement years. Some recent retirees are even returning to the workforce. That's because for many seniors, the thought of going back to work is much more appealing than that of facing a future of baloney sandwiches and beans. Of course, the biggest disappointment sets in when retirees realize that their savings won't be enough to support their lavish lifestyles. Bummer, dude? No. Bummer, Boomer.

Court rules Toyota employee worked to death
The recent death of a Toyota Motor Corporation employee has raised serious concerns about Japan's overburdened workforce. Most of the country's employees forego over 50 percent of their allotted vacation time and work overtime. And, the above case is far from being an isolated incident. In fact, Japan's labour ministry deals with over 300 work-related compensation requests every year.

WORKPLACE CHALLENGES

Foosball tables, beanbag chairs and cappuccino machines are SO last millennium. Now, when things slow down at work, many choose to gather online rather than gathering around the water cooler. Today's employees plug into networked games to blow off steam, and in the case of a first-person shooter game like Doom, may even virtually corner the boss and blow their avatar into smithereens. Doom, anybody?

Are you... a cat person? A new type of club caters cats to Tokyo's stressed out workers and alienated apartment-dwellers. For an hourly fee, they get to space out with their fickle, feline friends over a pot of tea.
| - | "This place isn't on my way from work, but even if I'm pretty tired, I'd still stop by," said a 32-year-old system engineer and Calico regular.
|
- | Calico is one of at least three cafes that have opened up in Tokyo this year where visitors can mingle with cats as they enjoy a cup of tea.
|
- | Takafumi Fukui, the 34-year-old owner and a long-time cat lover, quit his job at a television game company and started the cafe in March. "I want everyone to forget about their jobs and relax," he said.
